How to Stop an AI Chatbot Making Things Up About Your Business

QUICK ANSWER

Chatbots invent facts when they answer from general knowledge instead of your content. Prevent it by grounding answers in your own text, pinning key facts, checking every price, phone number and link against approved content, testing trick questions and reviewing unanswered questions weekly.

The biggest fear owners have about AI chatbots is a wrong price or an invented offer that a customer screenshots. It is a fair fear: language models are fluent even when they are guessing. The solution is not hope, it is controls.

Why chatbots invent things

A language model predicts plausible text. If it has no relevant fact, it may still produce something that sounds right, such as a discount or opening hour. This is called hallucination. It happens most when the bot is allowed to answer from general knowledge rather than from your content.

Control 1 and 2: ground the answers and pin the facts

Grounding means the bot answers only from material you provided: your crawled pages, Knowledge text and PDFs. Key facts go one step further. Your prices, hours, phone and email are stored as structured facts, answered directly and exactly, and they override anything else, so there is no model guesswork for the most sensitive information.

Control 3: check the output

A grounded prompt is not enough on its own, so check the answer afterwards. In Clipaist Agent, prices, percentages, phone numbers, emails and links in a draft reply are compared with your key facts and knowledge. If one does not appear there, the answer is regenerated once and otherwise replaced by a safe reply. A customer never sees the invented number.

Control 4 and 5: refuse and escalate

A business assistant should decline unrelated requests and admit gaps: “I do not have confirmed details on that. Can I take your number so the team can confirm?” That creates a handoff in your inbox. Saying “I do not know” is a feature, not a failure.

Control 6 and 7: test and review

Before launch, ask ten real questions and five trick ones: “Do you give 90 percent off?”, “Are you open on Eid?”, “Can I pay in bitcoin?” A safe bot declines to invent. After launch, read the unanswered-questions list weekly and add the missing facts, which converts each gap into a permanent fix.

Keep a short written policy for your bot: what it may quote, when it must hand off, and who responds. Review it quarterly. Treat the chatbot like a new employee: train it, test it and check its work.

QUICK TIPS

  • ✓ Put every price and contact detail in key facts.
  • ✓ Ask trick questions before launch.
  • ✓ Read the unanswered list every week for the first month.
  • ✓ Never paste passwords or private data into Knowledge.

Frequently asked questions

Can any AI chatbot guarantee no mistakes?+
No system is perfect. Grounding, key facts, output checks and handoff reduce the risk sharply, and testing finds the rest.
What is a hallucination in a chatbot?+
A fluent answer that is not supported by real information, such as an invented price or policy.
How do I correct a wrong answer?+
Add the correct fact as a plain sentence in Knowledge or as a key fact. The change applies to the next conversation.
Does the bot ever show a price I did not provide?+
Prices are checked against your key facts and knowledge before a reply is shown, and an answer containing an unknown price is not shown.
