How to Split a PDF or Extract Pages (Free, No Upload)
6 min read • Updated October 2026
QUICK ANSWER
Open a PDF splitter, drop your file and choose a mode: extract specific pages into one PDF (for example 1-3, 5, 8-10), split into one file per page, or cut it into equal parts. Clipaist does this in your browser and gives you a ZIP.
You rarely need the whole PDF. Maybe it is one chapter from a long report, the signature page of a contract, or each invoice from a combined scan. Splitting gives you exactly the pages you need and nothing else.
The page range syntax is the only thing to learn, and it takes a minute. This guide covers every mode with examples.
How to do it, step by step
- Add one PDF. Open Split PDF and drop the file. The page count appears.
- Choose a mode. Extract pages into one PDF, ranges as separate files, every page, or every N pages.
- Enter pages if needed. Type ranges such as 1-3, 5, 8-10.
- Split and download. Press Split PDF and download the ZIP or the single extracted PDF.
Extract pages into one PDF
Choose "Extract pages" and type the pages you want: 1-3, 5, 8-10 gives a new PDF with pages 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10. An open end means "to the last page", so 8- takes page 8 to the end, and -3 takes the first three pages.
Pages are used in the order you type them. "3, 1, 2" produces a PDF whose first page is the old page 3, which is a quick way to reorder a few pages.
Ranges as separate files
Choose "Ranges as files" when each comma-separated part should become its own PDF. 1-4, 5-9 creates two files. They are packed in a ZIP and named with their page numbers so you can tell them apart.
Every page, or every N pages
"Every page" creates one PDF per page, useful for a stack of scanned invoices. "Every N pages" cuts the document into equal parts: with 10 pages and N = 4 you get pages 1-4, 5-8 and 9-10. The last file simply has the remainder.
Tips for big documents
For a very large PDF, split it into chapters first and work on the parts. If the parts are still big, compress them. To put pages from different PDFs together, extract what you need from each and then merge the pieces.
QUICK TIPS
- ✓ Use 8- for "page 8 to the end".
- ✓ Type pages in the order you want them in the result.
- ✓ Check the page count shown after you add the file.
- ✓ Use Every page for stacks of scanned single-page documents.
