Free AI Chatbot for WordPress: Plugin or One Script Line?
6 min read • Updated November 2026
QUICK ANSWER
You do not need a plugin to put an AI chatbot on WordPress. One script tag in the footer, or a code-snippet plugin such as WPCode, is enough. Plugins can help with settings UI, but they also add weight and another update to maintain. Test on one page first and clear your cache.
WordPress gives you two routes to a chatbot: install a plugin, or paste one script line. Both work. The difference is maintenance, page weight and how much control you have when something breaks.
This guide compares the two routes for a small site, lists the caching problems that make a working widget look broken, and gives a test order that avoids surprising your visitors.
Route one: a plugin
A plugin gives you a settings screen, so you can paste a key and toggle the widget without touching code. That is genuinely easier for a non-technical owner, and some plugins bundle extra features such as chat logs inside wp-admin.
The cost is weight and maintenance. Every plugin adds PHP, scripts and another update you must track. Chat plugins also tend to inject their own branding and may conflict with a caching or consent plugin.
Route two: one script line
Most hosted chatbot providers, including Clipaist Agent, give you a single script tag. Paste it in your theme footer, or in a code-snippet plugin so it survives theme updates. No build step, no dependency on a vendor plugin.
This is the route we recommend for a small site: fewer moving parts, and removing the chatbot is as simple as deleting one line.
The caching traps that make it look broken
Three usual suspects. Page caching serves an old copy of the footer without the new script. JavaScript minification or deferral moves the script after the code that expects it. A consent tool blocks third-party scripts until the visitor accepts, so the bubble appears only after consent.
Clear the page cache, exclude the widget script from minification, and test in a private window while logged out. If you use a consent tool, decide whether the chat counts as necessary or requires opt-in, and document that choice.
A safe test order
Install on one page first. Ask your ten most common questions, plus two trick questions about a discount and a service you do not offer. Check that the bot declines both.
Then test on mobile, logged out, with the cache on. Only after that, roll it out site-wide. Keep a note of the exact snippet location so you can remove it in one minute if needed.
What Clipaist Agent includes
A single script tag, a dashboard to train from your website, key facts for prices and hours, lead capture with email alerts, human handoff and an unanswered-questions list. It also connects Instagram DMs to the same inbox.
The launch plan is free with no card: 3 agents and 200 customer messages per month each, English replies. Paid plans with higher limits are planned; the pricing page always has the current numbers.
QUICK TIPS
- ✓ Prefer a code-snippet plugin over editing footer.php directly.
- ✓ Clear the page cache after adding the script.
- ✓ Exclude the widget from JS minification if it does not appear.
- ✓ Test logged out, on mobile, before rolling out site-wide.
