How to Add an AI Chatbot to Your Website in 2 Minutes (Clipaist Agent)

9 min read • Updated October 2026

QUICK ANSWER

Sign in, paste your website link, test the answers, add your FAQ or price list, then paste one script line before the closing body tag of your site. The agent answers customers 24/7 in their language and saves leads in your dashboard.

Customers message businesses at night, on weekends and in the middle of other work. If nobody answers within minutes, most of them buy somewhere else. The Clipaist Agent is a chat assistant that learns from your own website, answers the questions you get every day, and collects the phone number or email of people who want a human to follow up.

This guide takes you from nothing to a live assistant on your site. You do not need to write code. The only technical step is pasting one line into your website, and we show exactly where that goes on the most common platforms.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Create your account. Open the Clipaist Agent page, press Build your agent, register with your email and verify it from the message we send you.
  2. Paste your website link. In the AI Agent workspace paste your business website address and press Build my agent. It reads your main pages and is ready in under a minute.
  3. Test it like a customer. Open the Test chat tab and ask the questions your customers ask: prices, opening hours, location, how to book.
  4. Add what is missing. Open Knowledge and paste your price list, FAQ or policies, or upload a text file or a PDF brochure. Check the unanswered questions on the Overview tab.
  5. Set your details. In Settings choose the tone, greeting, brand colour and the email address where lead alerts should go.
  6. Install the widget. Open Install, press Copy code and paste the line just before the closing body tag of your website, or in your platform's custom code footer.
  7. Watch leads and questions. Check Leads for people who left their details and Overview for conversations and questions the agent could not answer. Add answers and the agent improves immediately.

What the agent can and cannot do

The agent answers only from the information you give it: the pages it reads from your website plus any text or PDF you add. It quotes prices and hours exactly as written and does not invent offers. When it does not know, it says so politely and invites the customer to leave a name and phone number or email you.

It answers in clear, friendly English; additional reply languages are planned for paid plans. It is a customer assistant for your business, not a general chatbot, so it politely declines unrelated requests such as writing code or giving medical advice.

Step 1 and 2: create the agent from your website

Register with your email, confirm it, and open the AI Agent workspace. Paste your full website address, for example https://yourbusiness.com, and press Build my agent. It reads your homepage and the most useful linked pages first (FAQ, pricing, services, contact, downloads), so make sure those pages exist and contain real text rather than only images.

The first build takes roughly 10 to 40 seconds. If your site has a sitemap.xml, the agent can read up to 30 pages from it (free during launch, a Pro feature when billing opens); otherwise it follows your most useful links. If it says it could not read your website, check the address, make sure the site opens without a password, and try again. Sites built entirely from images or heavy scripts may have no readable text; in that case create the agent with any page that has text and then paste your details in the Knowledge tab.

Step 3 and 4: test, then fill the gaps

Use the Test chat tab and ask ten real customer questions. Try different wording, short questions like "how much?" and incomplete questions. Note every answer that is missing or wrong.

Open Knowledge and paste the missing facts as plain sentences, for example "Teeth whitening costs $250 per session. We are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm." You can also upload a .txt, .md or .csv file or a PDF with selectable text. Scanned PDFs have no text layer; run them through the free PDF to Text tool first and paste the result.

Then open Key facts and add your prices, opening hours and contact details, one line each (for example Teeth whitening: $250 per session). Questions about them are answered exactly and instantly straight from these facts, they override anything found on your website, and the assistant is only allowed to quote prices, phone numbers, emails and links that appear in your facts or knowledge. If it ever drafts something that is not there, the answer is checked and replaced before the customer sees it.

Each agent keeps up to 160 knowledge blocks. The website crawl uses at most 100 of them, so there is always room for your own text. The Re-read my website button refreshes everything from your site after you change prices or pages, and it replaces text you added by hand, so add that text again afterwards.

Step 5: tone, greeting, colour and lead email

In Settings set the business name and a tagline, choose Friendly, Professional, Concise or Warm, write your own greeting and pick the brand colour for the chat button. The email address you enter receives an alert every time a visitor leaves a phone number or email; if you leave it empty the leads are still saved in the dashboard.

Also in Settings, fill in Allowed websites with the address of your site, one per line (for example yourbusiness.com; it also covers www. and you can use *.yourbusiness.com for subdomains). Only those websites can then use your chat. This protects your monthly messages from anyone who copies your code. Leave it empty while you test on other addresses.

Two optional Pro tools live in Settings: a short Business profile (who you serve, what you sell, what makes you different) that is added to the assistant's prompt, and a Recrawl reminder (off, 30, 90 or 180 days) that shows a banner in Overview when it is time to re-read your website. During launch both are free.

Step 6: install it on your website

Open the Install tab and copy the code. It is one line that looks like this: <script src="https://clipaist.com/agent-widget.js" data-key="your-key" async></script>. The key identifies your agent, so use the line from your own dashboard.

Plain HTML or custom site: paste the line just before the closing </body> tag of every page where you want the chat, or into your shared footer template.

WordPress: install a header and footer scripts plugin such as WPCode, add a new snippet of type HTML, paste the line, choose Site Wide Footer and activate it. Or paste the line into your theme's footer.php before </body>.

Shopify: open Online Store, Themes, Edit code, open theme.liquid and paste the line just before </body>. Save.

Wix: open Settings, Custom Code, Add Code, paste the line, set it to load on all pages and place it in the Body - end position.

Webflow: open Project settings, Custom code and paste the line into the Footer code box, then publish the site.

Squarespace: open Settings, Advanced, Code Injection and paste the line into the Footer box.

Google Tag Manager: create a Custom HTML tag with the line and trigger it on All Pages.

Two optional settings go inside the same tag. Add data-position="left" to dock the chat button on the left, or data-open="true" to open the chat automatically. If your code is ever copied or abused, create a new key on the Install tab; the old code stops working at once and you paste the new one. After installing, open your website in a private window, look for the round chat button in the bottom corner and send a test message.

Step 7: leads, conversations and unanswered questions

The Leads tab lists every visitor who left a phone number or email, with the time and their message. Export the list as CSV, or delete a lead you no longer need. A repeat enquiry from the same email or phone within 24 hours updates one lead instead of adding a duplicate. The Overview tab shows messages this month against your limit, conversations, helpful and not helpful ratings, and a list of questions the agent could not answer. That list is your to-do list: add the answer to Knowledge and the same question will be answered next time.

Chat transcripts are deleted automatically after your retention period (90 days by default; change it in Settings). Use Delete all chats in the Leads tab to remove them immediately. Leads are separate and are kept until you delete them.

Limits, privacy and costs

The free plan includes up to three agents and 200 customer messages per month for each agent. When the monthly limit is reached the chat politely asks visitors to contact you or leave their details instead of showing an error. During launch every advanced feature is free and no card is needed; Free and Pro tiers open when billing goes live. Current details: /pricing.

Chats and leads belong to you and are visible only in your dashboard. The agent never shares one business's information with another. Chat transcripts are kept for the retention period you choose in Settings (90 days by default), then removed automatically; leads are kept until you export or delete them. Tell your visitors that the chat is handled by an AI assistant; the widget footer links to the privacy policy. Avoid putting private data such as passwords or payment details into your Knowledge text.

Troubleshooting

The chat button does not appear: if you set Allowed websites, make sure the exact address of the page (including any staging or preview address) is listed. Then confirm the line is on the page (view page source and search for agent-widget.js), clear your site cache or CDN, and check that an ad blocker or a strict Content Security Policy is not blocking scripts from clipaist.com. If your site uses a Content Security Policy, allow clipaist.com in script-src and connect-src.

The agent gives a wrong or outdated answer: open Knowledge and add the correct facts as clear sentences, or press Re-read my website if the change is already on your site.

The agent says it does not know something that is on your site: that page may not have been crawled. Paste the text into Knowledge. Pages that are blocked from visitors or that need a login cannot be read.

It answers in the wrong language: it follows the customer's language. Short greetings may be answered in English; the next message will follow the customer.

Need WhatsApp, a CRM or something custom?

The self-serve agent covers your website chat. If you want the same assistant on WhatsApp or Instagram, connected to your CRM, booking calendar or order system, or trained on private documents, our team builds custom AI automation. Email [email protected] with a short description of what should happen and we will reply with a plan and a quote.
