How to Add an AI Chatbot to a Shopify Store and Answer Shoppers 24/7

QUICK ANSWER
Build an agent from your store URL, copy the one-line script, open Online Store, Themes, Edit code, paste it into theme.liquid just before the closing body tag and save. Then add shipping, returns, sizing and payment rules as key facts so the bot answers the questions that block checkout.
Shoppers rarely abandon a store because of the product. They leave because one question went unanswered: does it ship to my city, can I return it, will it fit. A chatbot that answers those instantly removes the friction at the exact moment it appears.
Here is how to put one on Shopify in a few minutes, and what to teach it so it actually helps sales.
How to do it, step by step
- Create the agent. Paste your store address, for example https://yourstore.com, into the Clipaist AI Agent workspace and build.
- Copy the install line. Open Install and copy the single script line with your key.
- Open the theme code. In Shopify admin go to Online Store, Themes, the three-dot menu, Edit code.
- Paste into theme.liquid. Open layout/theme.liquid and paste the line just before the closing body tag. Save.
- Test as a shopper. Open the storefront in a private window and ask about shipping and returns.
Why theme.liquid is the right place
theme.liquid wraps every page of your theme, so one paste puts the chat on the home page, collections, products and cart. Duplicate your theme first (Actions, Duplicate) so you have a one-click rollback if something goes wrong. If you change themes later, repeat the paste in the new theme.liquid.
Shopify checkout pages on most plans are locked and do not run custom scripts. That is normal: the chat is for the browsing stage, which is where questions happen.
What to teach a store chatbot
Shop questions are predictable. Put these in key facts or Knowledge as complete sentences: delivery areas and times, shipping cost and free-shipping threshold, return and exchange window, payment methods including cash on delivery if you offer it, order tracking steps, size guide, warranty and how to reach a human.
Add product knowledge for your top sellers: materials, dimensions, care. Your website crawl picks up product pages, but a short plain list of facts for best sellers is more reliable than long marketing copy.
Turn questions into leads
Many visitors ask a question and leave without buying. The agent offers to take a phone number or email for follow-up and saves it in Leads with the message that triggered it. Export the list as CSV and follow up with a human message, a restock alert or a discount you choose yourself. The bot never invents a discount.
What it will not do on Shopify
The standard agent does not read live inventory, track individual orders or edit carts. When someone asks “where is my order 1042”, it explains how to track and offers a handoff to you. Connecting orders and inventory is a custom project, which you can request at [email protected].
QUICK TIPS
- ✓ Duplicate your theme before editing code.
- ✓ Put shipping, returns and payment rules in key facts.
- ✓ Add a plain-sentence fact list for your five best sellers.
- ✓ Check the unanswered questions list after every sale or campaign.
